Press release

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is encouraged by Minister Marc Garneau’s statement on November 8 regarding a forthcoming assistance package for airlines, airports and the aerospace sector. We are likewise pleased to read the Minister’s acknowledgement of just how vital a thriving aviation industry is to a prosperous economy, a strong supply chain and a connected country. Pre-COVID, the area surrounding Toronto Pearson was the second-largest employment zone in all of Canada, and airports across Canada have a similar track record of driving economic development and creating jobs. A financially stable Toronto Pearson can help drive regional recovery and prosperity.

While details of the package and how it will aid in the recovery of the industry are not yet clear, this assistance is sorely needed. The Minister’s statement is a sign of progress in what has been a challenging year for Toronto Pearson, our partners and the aviation industry across the country. We look forward to continued collaboration with the Government of Canada, not only in relation to relief, but also the development of a country-wide COVID-19 testing framework, to restart the aviation industry and build a more resilient Canada.
