Collaborating for improved operations in headwind conditions

Beginning this week, NAV CANADA is updating tools used by air traffic controllers at Toronto Pearson to increase operational resiliency and sustain efficient airport operations.

The new technology, known as Intelligent Approach, improves spacing on the final approach - when an aircraft is lined up with the runway - by taking into account the effect of headwinds on safe spacing between aircraft. It will allow aircraft to approach the airport at optimized intervals rather than drifting further apart than required.

This innovation to improve airport efficiency and improve the experience for Toronto Pearson travellers while prioritizing safety is the first of its kind to be used at a North American airport and was developed in collaboration with NAV CANADA, National Air Traffic Services (NATS), Leidos and the GTAA.
