Wall Drawing #1100, Concentric Bands

A pioneer of the Minimal and Conceptual art movement in the 1960s, Sol LeWitt mastered the usage of flat lines and simple geometric shapes, rejecting the pictorial and narrative style of traditional art. 

For LeWitt, the conception of the idea is the artwork, rather than its execution.  

Part of LeWitt’s highly influential Wall Drawing series, the colourful Wall Drawing #1100, Concentric Bands, was executed onsite by a group of artists using and interpreting LeWitt’s instructions. Letting others execute his ideas put into practice his beliefs of what constitutes a work of art. LeWitt produced approximately 1,350 wall drawings over the lifespan of his very prolific career.
